Spinalonga Island offers ideal conditions for windsurfing! Spinalonga ('long thorn' once a Venetian Fortress and a leper colony) has strong winds that are perfect for windsurfing! The Turkish conquest of Crete. Spinalonga Island had remained Venetian for almost half a century and was a refuge for Christians who fled the turks. The mighty fortress of Spinalonga Island was originally erected in 1579 on the original ruins of an ancient acropolis. Captured by the Turks in 1669 it was finally regained in 1715 when the Venetians handed the island to the Turks entering into a special treaty. In later years, the Republic Crete turned the island into a leper colony for the lepers of Crete. The leper colony only closed in 1957! Today Spinalonga Island has undergone extensive renovations and makes an excellent tour! You can get to Spinalonga Island from many boats waiting at the main harbour of Elounda bay, or from Plaka and many tour boats arrive from Aghios Nikolaos Crete delivering many tourists every day. A tourist attraction worthy of a visit.
Please note it does get very busy in high season, also it is a very windy and hot island, so perhaps you don't want to take children there in the height of the heat.
